When you become an Airbnb Host, you open the doors of your home to travelers from around the world—and welcome them into your community, too. As part of our commitment to support you as a Host, we want to invest in the neighborhoods and towns you call home. Last year, we announced the creation of a new Community Fund, which will distribute $10 million dollars in 2021 to local and national organizations around the world with more to come in the future.

We partnered closely with Airbnb’s Host Advisory Board to decide how the fund should work. The Host Advisory Board selected this year’s areas of focus: COVID-19 relief, economic empowerment, and education.

    How the inaugural funding works
Working with our program partner, GlobalGiving, Host Advisory Board members reviewed and selected a list of global organizations working in one or more of this year’s areas of focus. We have empowered our Host Community Leaders to lead the final phase, working with local Host Clubs on Facebook to vote for organizations they believe have the greatest impact.

Community Leaders will create polls for the Host Clubs and encourage fellow Hosts to vote. Guided by the votes of Hosts from around the world, we’ll grant final awards to organizations to support their important work.

Community Leaders will receive a list of finalist organizations from the Host Advisory Board in April 2021. Hosts will vote within Facebook groups, and we expect voting to end May 10. Informed by Host votes, grants will begin to be announced in June and distributed by GlobalGiving.

In addition to awarding grants from Hosts’ votes, Airbnb will also invest in additional organizations that we believe play an important role in the communities in which Hosts live.

    Why were these themes chosen?
The Host Advisory Board selected three themes for the 2021 inaugural Community Fund: COVID-19 relief, economic empowerment and education. These themes were selected as the areas that best advanced the Community Fund’s goal of Strengthening Communities in 2021. The Community Fund is a long-term investment, and in the years to come, we’ll explore more areas to invest in to help support Hosts’ communities.

    How were the organizations selected?
Airbnb partnered with GlobalGiving in addition to the Host Advisory Board to identify the organizations Hosts Clubs will vote on.

Why will voting take place through Airbnb Host Clubs on Facebook?
One of the goals of the Community Fund is to empower Hosts to support organizations that help improve communities. Airbnb’s Host Clubs are the local arm of the Host community, representing Host groups in over 40 countries. The primary tool Host Clubs and their Community Leaders use to connect is Facebook groups.

    Are all the organizations vetted?
We worked with our partner, GlobalGiving, a US IRS 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit, to identify organizations that are part of their vetted network. All organizations in GlobalGiving's community are required to submit a due diligence application to ensure they are performing charitable work in a transparent and accountable manner, and meet requirements for registration with their local government.

We’re excited to partner with Hosts to help strengthen their communities through this new grant program. We hope you’ll join us and participate by voting for your favorite organization. If you’re already part of a Host Club, you can vote through your club’s Facebook group, and if you’re not, consider joining your local Host Club to weigh in on the Community Fund—and to connect with other Hosts in your area. While Host Clubs aren't available everywhere now, we're working to expand them in the future. And as always, please let us know what you think in the Community Center. We value your feedback, and we’re putting it at the forefront of everything we do.
