All About Puerto Plata
The city of Puerto Plata is one of the most popular destinations in the Dominican Republic, thanks to its pristine golden beaches and location at the base of the towering mountain of Isabel de Torres. Dramatic, sprawling landscapes with rolling hills, meandering rivers, lush valleys, and fertile farmlands surround this historical city on the Dominican Republic’s northern Amber Coast. You can take in the local scenery while experiencing a range of outdoor activities, including kite surfing, kayaking, ziplining, golfing, and diving.
Beyond its natural beauty, the city is the region’s provincial capital and the area’s cultural center. Because of this, there are many opportunities to explore local cultural and historical offerings like the Amber Museum or the historic 16th-century Spanish fortress of Fortaleza San Felipe — or you can tour the island’s famous rum distilleries and cigar factories.
How do I get around Puerto Plata?
Puerto Plata La Union Airport (POP), also known as Gregorio Luperón International Airport, serves international flights into the region and will likely be your arrival point when traveling to Puerto Plata. Taxis and minibuses are quick, easy to find, and the preferred mode of transport should you need to travel outside of town or from one end of the municipality to the other. Walking, however, is the best way to get around and get a feel for the area. Ride-hailing services are also readily available. While rental cars are available at the airport, you are unlikely to need one during your stay in Puerto Plata.
When is the best time to stay in a vacation rental in Puerto Plata?
The northern coast of the Dominican Republic experiences warm to hot temperatures throughout the entire year. The area’s heavy seasonal rainfall ensures the need for good planning when searching for villas in Puerto Plata. The summer months (June through September) provide the warmest temperatures; if you plan on participating in any of a range of outdoor experiences, consider visiting during this time, as there is less chance of rain interrupting the fun. However, the rest of the year hosts an array of festivals, events, and cultural activities. During February and March, you can participate in the Caribbean's famous Carnival, where colorful parade floats, dance troupes, costumed dancers, and musicians celebrate local life and culture. During November, renowned musicians from across the globe gather for the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, a series of free concerts held just outside of Puerto Plata township.
