Produciendo Café en el Bosque Nuboso de Monteverde
When our visitors arrive at the Sanctuary, the first thing we will do is make a small introduction about our family project, we are guardians of 48 hectares of forest since 1999. During the walk to the plantation, we will talk about the history of coffee in the world and Costa Rica, and then explain on the plantation what permaculture consists of and sustainable farming versus monocultures. Also, learning about specialty coffee and the different ways of processing and finish with a visit to the drying area. On the way back you will have a coffee tasting in three different roasts and methods and each participant will learn how to prepare their own coffee in the proper way. In the end you will learn: how to be a more informed and smart buyer, make the most of the product and value the work behind each cup of coffee. Other things to note We are the only specialty organic coffee plantation in Monteverde. During the year coffee goes through different stages, therefore, depending on the season you will see different processes.
El Tigre Waterfalls Monteverde
We reinvented ourselves. Due to COVID-19 emergency now this hike can be done safetly without a guide nor groups! Drive yourself to El Tigre Waterfalls (google maps or waze as El Tigre Waterfalls using the road named ¨Los Olivos¨. Avoid the route called ¨Las Nubes¨), parking is safe and free. You don´t need a 4x4. In our small reception/coffee place we will give you a map and all the instructions and safety tips that you need to do this tour. Now… THIS IS ADVENTURE! The trail is very well marked and easy to follow. You will pass through 4 big waterfalls and 9 bridges (hanging bridges and natural tree bridges) the hike is 5.2km, intermediate level. At the end of the trail there is a guide waiting for you with the horses. This is the only guided part of the tour and it is about 35min. No experience needed. A delicious typical lunch is included. You will be abe to choose between multiple options (also veggie :D ). We open every day from 7.30am to 2.00pm. Sanitary protocols: For your own safety face mask and hand washing are required to enter. We comply with all the security measures requested by the government of Costa Rica. Don Juan - Coffee and Chocolate Tour
Don Juan Tours Arenal is a family business that through its tours teach visitors the whole process behind two very important products worldwide, Coffee and Chocolate. Our experience: Don Juan - Coffee and Chocolate Tour, will take you to know the entire Coffee process, from the seed to the delicious cup of coffee. Once the coffee tour is finished, we will start with the sweetest part of the tour, the delicious chocolate. Like coffee, we will talk about the entire Chocolate process, from the seed to the delicious chocolate bar and we will end up selecting some members of the group to grind the cacao beans and make their own chocolate bar. Once finished you will have the opportunity to taste several types of chocolate such as Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate. One of our main features is the infrastructure we have, since the Arenal Area is well known for having a very changing climate, it goes from being very sunny and humid to heavy rains, even with a electric storms on some occasions, that is why that 100% of our trails are protected and made of cement, which will allow to enjoy the tour on sunny or rainy days. Families with children who need to take their stroller or people with some physical limitation will not have trouble walking with a walker, crutches or wheelchair.
Go birdwatching with a licensed guide
We'll start birdwatching at 6:00 AM, where we'll see about 30 different species of birds at an elevation of about 4,500 feet above sea level. Then we'll stop at a cafeteria, where we will have a chance to check some bird feeders as we enjoy a great cup of Costa Rican coffee. After that, we'll move up to Curicancha Reserve where we'll walk through two different life zones including different types of forests (secondary, transitional and primary) plus open areas where we'll be able to see much more variety of birds or Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve to be at a different elevation—about 5,000 feet above sea level—where we'll see much more interesting birds, including the resplendent quetzal, guans, barbets, three-wattled bellbirds, tinamous, and so many others. Typically we would see 60 to 70 different types of birds. Other things to note Bring binoculars, a bird book, hiking shoes, insect repellent, rain gear, and a hat.
Finca El Paraiso Farm & Cheese Tour
This is a third generation, small scale, sustainable farm. The animals are pasture-fed and roam freely throughout the day. It is our vision to continue to operate this farm without the use of pesticides or chemical based fertilizers and to maintain a balance of pasturelands and forest. Guests are invited to take a tour of the farm. Come and see the cows up close and try your hand at milking. Take a tour of the garden, where you will find banana trees, the beginnings of a small scale coffee farm, and seasonal fruits and veggies under the care of our family. We also have sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry on the premises that are all a part of the farm operation. MonteVerde is an area with a rich history in dairy production. We invite to try fresh Costa Rican cheese. You can enjoy an authentic meal featuring the freshly made cheese, hand made tortillas, along with other locally sourced and seasonably available items. Arenal Volcano Unique Walking Tour
There are 2 options of intensity (A) HIKERS (default option) and (B) RELAXED (text me to request the Relaxed version prior to booking). The RELAXED option is a beautiful easy going walk, which can accommodate special accessibility needs like wheelchairs, strollers, and mobility impairments. The HIKERS option is more demanding and it includes hiking at the foot of the volcano, walking over old lava rock, and visiting a 400 year old Ceiba tree. In either option we will (1) explore a place present ONLY in 7% of the planet, (2) enter the Arenal Volcano National Park at a great location, (3) enjoy nature via a beautiful walk through a forest with exuberant vegetation, (4) make several strategic stops that will help us uncover what most tourists miss: the best kept secrets of this National Park and its world-wide relevance for the country and the planet, (5) enjoy great views of the volcano, lake, and wildlife. (6) This nature journey is filled with personal family stories that help illustrate the history surrounding the majestic area and country. (THE BEST CANOPY ZIP LINE IN THE FOREST) What we will do and include is: 1- Eight cables of different distances, between 590 to 1315 feet. 2- Two short walks on trails in the forest. 3- 160 feet high rappell on a dry natural wall. (optional for the one who wants to.) It also depends on weather conditions and security. 4- Visit to see or buy souvenirs from the indigenous Malekus. 5- With the bracelet that we give you, you will have the right to enter the Montaña de Fuego Resort pools, located in front of our place. If you do the 3pm tour and want to use the pools, you need to pay for a taxi back to your hotel. Our last ride is at 5:15pm (It is optional) Other things to note: - You can bring personal camera that can be secured to the harness or helmut. - If you bring your cell phone, we recommend a special pocket to tie. Sloth's watching tour & Natural Trail
Sloth's Territory is a total trail of 1300 meters, which extends along a natural forest surrounded La Havana River, into a total property of 10 hectares. At your arrival you will park at the Rodriguez Family's House, owners of Sloth's Territory. Their house works as reception, so it is a meet up point for waiting the start time of the activity. Right at the moment of your arrival, you will be greeted and welcomed of one of their family (normally Oscar, Keylor or Mauricio and the ones leading the project and the activity). During the hike, the trail allows you to enjoy a gallery forest with lush vegetation and giant tree; constituting the habitat of many species like: opossums, two and tree-toed sloths, howler monkeys, blue jeans frogs, porcupines and many birds such as toucans, motmots, tiger herons, kingfishers tanagers and much others. But the main attraction are the sloths watching and the blue jeans frog watching. The Rodriguez Family have months of daily counting the sloths and we are sure that you will have the chance to see between 3 and 12 different sloths (from two and three toed-sloths). The duration of this activity can be from 1,5 to 2 hours, all depends if you want to focus just on the sloths or if you are interest of watching more plants and animals. Other things to note The hike is done in a natural environment, that's why we can't guaranty a 100% observation of named animal in the descriptions, but by our daily monitoring we know that it is very possible.

On this guided walk, you will not only learn the interesting natural history of an ecosystem that remains hidden to most of us, but you will also enjoy impressive panoramic views of the beautiful and unique Tropical Cloud Forest. Hike to Rio Fortuna Waterfall, Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs
We will meet the guide at the Sloth Watching Trail at 8:00 am, or at your hotel if it is near La Fortuna. (please indicate that you require transportation) First we go to the majestic La Fortuna Waterfall, which is 230 feet high; where if the weather allows it, we will bathe in its crystal clear waters. (if it rains a lot it won't be possible) We will be around an hour and a half in this place; then we will take the minibus to go to the next point and one of the most spectacular, the walk in the tropical forest to the base of the Arenal Volcano, where we will visit the lava flows of the years 1525, 1968 and 2010; Also while we enjoy this beautiful ecological park we will learn about the trees and animals that inhabit this place. (Approximately two hours to the base of the volcano and one hour to the green lagoon). After the descent we will enjoy a bath in the green lagoon of totally clean water and of volcanic formation. Once we have enjoyed it, we will have a traditional lunch. To finish we return to the bus to go to the natural river of hot springs (Rio Tabacón), where we will enjoy a majestic place, we will also put on a volcanic mud mask. For after a great day of adventure and experience, return to La Fortuna around 4 pm.

Cooking with a Costa Rican Family
After booking our experiences, you will arrive at our kitchen where you will be very welcome and where you will share a good time with an authentic Costa Rican family. After introducing ourselves and getting to know each other over a refreshing drink, we will take you on a tour of our organic garden, where you will learn about the different crops and aromatic plants, followed by picking some of the ingredients that we will use for the preparation of our dish. When we return to the kitchen we will prepare a refreshing mojito to proceed to prepare a typical dish with fresh ingredients, produced by us and our neighbors. At the end of the preparation of the dish, we will consume everything prepared in a family atmosphere. If you come with more time than agreed there is a good chance to observe some animals such as frogs, birds and sloth that live in our garden.

We start with a small walk up in our organic farm, to collect some ingredients. We will bring in into the cooking area and start to prepare the food. We will explain step by step and any questions can be asked. At the end, we will bring the food to the table and enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner.
