If you purchased travel insurance before the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, review your policy closely. Travel insurance generally doesn’t cover a “foreseen event”—one that has already started or has a reasonable expectation of taking place. Known or foreseen circumstances like COVID-19 and fear of travel due to COVID-19 are likely excluded from most policies. However, coverage may be available if you actually become ill or are quarantined.
If your trip hasn’t occurred yet, some coverages may still be available. You may also be able to purchase a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) plan, a plan that may reimburse you for expenses incurred if your trip is canceled for any reason, including COVID-19. Other plans may be available that cover you if you are forced to cancel your trip for reasons out of your control, like illness or job loss.
Where to buy travel insurance
You can buy travel insurance directly through a travel insurance company's website, through transportation providers like airlines and rental car companies, or through a travel insurance aggregator that brings together plans from many different providers.
