What you'll do

With guided, professional instruction, you'll have a fun and creative time making an item out of clay on a pottery wheel. I will show you how to work with the clay, get it ready for the wheel, center it, and eventually start shaping. Usually students can make either a small bowl, plate, mug or vase on their first try. You will get up to 30 minutes of time on the wheel which is plenty to create one item, and then you can add accents to your piece i.e. handle and you'll get to handbuild for the remainder of the time (add accents to your piece). You can take the pottery home with you the same day you make them, or—if you'd like—I can fire your work, glaze it, and ship it to you for a small fee. I also offer other experiences: canvas painting, glass fusing, hand building with clay, mosaics, glow in the dark painting, pottery painting, silkscreening. ***Drop me a note if you'd like alternate time for your appointment.****

I've been teaching art for over 20 years, and I love what I do. I am patient and fun, and enjoy sharing my knowledge of clay. Students tell me that they've always wanted to "throw," and—because of my passion for clay—I am a great teacher. It fills me with joy to see others succeed at something they've never done before.

It was an amazing experience! My partner and I really appreciated the hands-on instruction and we had a significant amount of time after finishing up on the wheel to personalize our pieces.

Very interesting experience. Will definitely go again. Have something in mind for your second small piece, overall really good experience if you want to exercise your creativity!

I will say if you have never done pottery, this experience isn’t for you. Stated in the description for this experience it says that you have a choice of making a bowl, plate, mug etc. Walking in, my partner and I didn’t have a choice. We immediately started making a bowl. When asked if I could make a mug the instructor told me “we will see, a bowl is easier I can’t promise you that you will make a mug because you won’t be able to it’s not easy” I thought that was the point of this experience, to make something you have never made before no matter the difficulty. Especially if it states in the description that you have that option to choose what you want to make. It felt VERY rushed. We didn’t get our full 30 minutes on the wheel. Walking in we were told to immediately sit and to start right a way. We never received aprons for this experience like it also says in the description. After we were done our short time on the wheel we went to a separate room where we were told this is where you make your additional parts for your piece (spoon, handle for mug, lid, etc) we were given extra clay and we were left alone in the room. This is where I mean if you have never done pottery this where it could be a bit tricky for you. No one to give you a creative idea or to give you options. We were told to look at the examples that were on a table in the room. That’s it. It’s fun playing in clay mind you but if you have no clue what you are doing you can get lost very quickly. Unfortunately, this experience wasn’t what I expected it to be and I wish I knew before hand or else I would have skipped this experience.

It was a fun experience but I feel it was too short-lived, I would like to have spent more time on the wheel out the hour. Would go back again though, to get more time on the wheel
