What you'll do

We'll start at the new Toyosu—the world's largest fish market. We'll then go to the outer area known as the Tsukiji old market and Tsukiji Uogashi, a new building with fish-selling areas, including a background area that is off-limits to ordinary tourists. We'll drop in for fish while experiencing the authentic and dynamic atmosphere of a wholesale market. After taking some shopping time at the outer area, we'll purchase a variety of fish and head to Asakusa. We'll visit the popular Buddhist Sensō-ji temple before we go to my shop to prepare Kaisekistyle lunch--Traditional Japanese Cuisine--, Kaisen Donburi—sashimi rice bowls—with fresh seafood and more. After our meal, we'll have some surprise treats. Please note that the markets are lively and changing each day. Please arrive on time and be aware that the experience can run over time.
Other things to note
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes. The new market is so huge it will seem like we are viewing a factory. We'll go to the Tsukiji old market after that and enjoy comparing the two marketplaces.

We'll meet at Shijo-Mae Station, on the Yurikamome Line, and go to Toyosu, the new market. We'll then visit Tsukiji, the old outer market and walk around the fish-selling area. Afterwards, we'll take the subway to Asakusa to visit the Sensō-ji Buddhist temple and go to my shop, where we'll transform the fish into sashimi.

We had the best of times touring the markets with Toshi. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he answered all of our many, many, many questions. Getting to see and experience all three markets was the highlight of our trip to Tokyo - followed closely by the incredible meal he and his wife so kindly made for us with seafood and veggies that we'd picked up at the market that morning. We cannot speak highly enough about Toshi-san and this tour.

An absolutely fantastic experience! I highly recommend it. Toshi-san took us behind the scenes where we had a warm introduction to each of his suppliers while being in the thick of the frenetic morning market. I’ve never seen so much seafood, or the size of some of these things, like oysters the length of your hand! At each stop he picked up something up for our meal later. He pointed out and detailed various creatures, products and things happening. He also took pictures and video for us which was great because we could just focus on being in the moment. It was a crisp clear day and after the Toyosu market we went up to the roof and had a perfect view of a snow capped Mt Fuji! He then took us to the old market Tsukiji via bus and we had a 30 minute window for browsing/shopping on our own. After that, we headed to Asakusa by train and he gave us a tour of Sensō-ji temple as we walked through the area on the way to his place. Once there, he and his wife served us multiple dishes of the fresh seafood he bought that morning with us at the market. The meal alone is worth the cost! He has an interesting place full of books, whisky, bikes and music. To top it all off, our post meal surprise really solidified that I’ll remember this experience for years to come!

This was an absolutely wonderful experience. 100% worth the price and early morning. First you’ll drag yourself out of bed at 5am, grumbling and wondering what’s gotten into you. Suck it up! The fish market ain’t waiting for you. Next you’ll meet Toshi-san near the new intermediate market and he’ll take you through for an hour or two. This is the high-paced fish market you expect. If you’ve seen Jiro dreams of sushi, this is the (new version of) the market he is shown shopping at. Tourists aren’t allowed in this market, so if you want to see it you’ll have to go with Toshi. At the end of the intermediate market we stopped at the original Masamoto knife store and I picked out a nice new carbon steel yanagiba (sashimi knife) to purchase. We then went to the Tsujiki market. Tourists can go here after 8 or 9AM, but going with Toshi was a much more valuable experience. After that we took a quick trip through Asakusa shrine, and Toshi discussed the tradition and history that went into it. The whole time, Toshi took constant pictures and videos. A problem I often have with traveling is that I want to have pictures and videos of my experiences to remember them by, but I also don’t want to devalue my experiences by obsessing over having my phone out all the time. Having Toshi constantly take pictures decoupled this issue and allowed me to have the best of both worlds. I really appreciated it! Lastly we walked to Toshi’s shop where his wife made us a delicious lunch using the fish, shrimp and crab we had bought that morning. All in all an absolutely fantastic experience. Toshi-san, you should be proud of what you’ve put together and I know I will never forget it. Thank you!!!

Amazing insiders tour of Toyosu Market. Most people don’t get a chance to see this portion of the market, let alone interact with the vendors. Lots of opportunities to pick up food, tea, knives, etc that go hand in hand with the market. Lunch was incredible and WAY more than we expected from the description! Definitely recommend.

Toshi-san was an excellent host who was very knowledgeable and personable. The tour was great value for money and deserves all its accolades. We really appreciated his and his wife's amazing hospitality and cooking. The seafood meal was a feast to remember. We will definitely recommend this tour to any and everyone.

Toshi was fantastic - very attentive and put so much effort into making the day special regardless of the ongoing corona virus situation. The lunch made by his wife was beyond delicious, and he taught me so much about Japanese culture and etiquette. The cycling was such a great way to enjoy the city! Highly recommend!
