What you'll do

Dubbed "The Queen of the Washington Suburbs" in 1903, Cleveland Park is one of Washington's most beautiful and architecturally eclectic neighborhoods. From pastoral farmland, to the summer escape of wealthy Washingtonians, to one of the first "streetcar suburbs," Cleveland Park is well worth exploring. Named for Presidential resident Grover Cleveland, the neighborhood boasts fanciful Victorian mansions, gorgeous gardens, and the second largest cathedral in the United States. Visit the National Cathedral grounds, stroll along picturesque tree lined streets, see the oldest home in DC, and experience the city like a local!

Carolyn and Sam of DC Design Tours are two history buff architecture nerds with a passion for story telling!

Carolyn is a former architect and life-long lover of all things brick and mortar. She prefers to talk about buildings than draw them. The District has been her home since 2006, and when not guiding, you can find her counting columns at the National Building Museum (there are 152) and traipsing through Rock Creek National Park.

Sam is an enthusiast for architectural design, history, and talking a mile a minute. Originally from the Bluegrass State, he's a full fledged Washingtonian now.

Where you'll be

We'll begin our tour on the grounds of the breathtaking National Cathedral, one of the largest churches in the US. We'll explore the nooks and crannies of the grounds, stroll through the Bishop's Garden, and stop for plenty of pictures. Then it's into the neighborhood of Cleveland Park, walking down tree lined streets past historic mansions and stately homes. We'll wrap up on the main drag, Wisconsin Avenue, lined with local shops and restaurants

Carolyn was a fantastic guide - offering a range of interesting stories and facts from the history of the Cherry Blossoms and current horticultural practices to history of the monuments we visited (alongside funny current stories about the monuments and visitors). Carolyn was also incredibly personable and made me feel welcome and comfortable.

We truly appreciated the small group tour of the monuments in the Tidal Basin. Carolyn communicated clearly with us re: where to meet. The day was beautiful and memorable. Thank you so much!
