What you'll do

Find out what you can eat in the woods! We'll hike in the lovely Santa Cruz mountains where I'll guide you on a beautiful, quiet 1-3-mile walk in the unique coastal oak & redwood forest. Together we'll learn the ancient ways of identifying edible and medicinal mushrooms, plants, roots, flowers, nuts and seeds (depending on the season). Along the way we'll discuss proper harvesting and preparation techniques while connecting to the beauty and abundance of our ecosystem.

This experience is a fun, hands-on way to connect to what can feed, heal and harm us in the wild. You'll walk away with a whole new appreciation and understanding of nature! The hike is doable for all skill levels. See you on the trail!

Other things to note:
Secure your own transportation to The Buttery and we'll caravan to the hike start. Bring: layers (it can get chilly in the redwoods), water bottle and comfortable hiking shoes. Optional: hiking poles, camera, hat, sunglasses.

I'm a Santa Cruz local, with over 10 years experience as a naturalist. I've traveled all over the world foraging and adventuring outdoors. I turned my passion into a business when I founded Mountain Sea Adventures, an outdoor adventure company connecting people to mother nature. My experience is not manufactured or forced, my routes are uncrowded and peaceful. For me, foraging is a way of life: we make a connection with our natural world through being nourished and healed by plants, mushrooms and trees.

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful foraging experience with Caitlin. It was a beautiful day in Santa Cruz and we found lots of tastry trail snacks along the way. We were also lucky to have found different varieties of mushrooms. Caitlin was knowledgeable and I really like her energy. I highly recommend this experience.

All nature lovers should experience a hike like this. It has made me more mindful and aware of my surroundings - what can help, what can harm, etc. I feel more confident walking through the woods now and more connected. I took lots of notes and pictures on my phone and can't wait to explore more. Caitlin's passion shone through and she helped guide us technically, emotionally, and mentally in the forest.

What a delightful afternoon learning about what the Californian ecosystem had to offer. We learned a great deal from Caitlin. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about the planet and our relationship with nature. We used what we learned on our next hike and I’m sure we’ll continue our learning in the future. Thank you Caitlin! Especially for introducing us to our new friend - sheep sorrel. Yum!

I picked this experience as something for my wife to enjoy, I'm not the biggest naturalist myself. Don't like hikes, and I thought it might be a bit much for me to enjoy. Not at all, it turns out. I had a great time, as did my wife. Learned a lot, got immersed in the experience, and genuinely felt connected to nature. Would recommend, even for skeptical city boys like me. Would absolutely recommend if you already enjoy this sort of thing.

My boyfriend and I had a great time! We got to taste many plants straight from the tree or from the stem. Caitlin was a great host and very informative and friendly. we tried many greens and leaves and were informed on possible benefits. We saw a couple different wild mushrooms, none were edible.
