What you'll do

I'm offering a fun workshop where you will dye a wool or silk scarf that you can wear while exploring the sometimes chilly California coast and bring back home as a souvenir to keep those memories alive! During the workshop you will learn the process of natural dyeing from extracting dyes from local plants dyeing a scarf. Inspired by the traditions in this region we will use acorn, eucalyptus leaves and coffee berry bush leaves. You will have a wide choice of traditional dyes to work with as well. The workshop is very much hands on, you will be working on your own projects and make your own natural dyes for your scarf. Each person is provided with individual tools and working station. The maximum group size is 8 people, which allows guests to practice social distancing.
Other things to note
The dyeing workshop is hands on and the quests are doing all the steps of natural dyeing. The workshop is not suitable for small children, since we will be handling hot liquids.

I taught both children and adults in textile crafts and art for almost thirty years in Finland and trained teachers in that field at the University of Helsinki. Since moving to California three years ago I've opened my own fiber art studio where I continue weaving, dyeing wool using local plants, and teaching workshops on weaving, dyeing and up-cycling materials such as textiles and plastics. I embrace traditions and meld those ideas and methods with modern skills. I'm committed to environmentally sustainable crafts and would like to share the joy of creating and making with you. I'm following all the cleaning and safety guidelines provided by the Airbnb including face covers, cleanness and social distancing.

Where you'll be

The workshop takes place at Auli's Studio. During the Covid-19 pandemic we are working and dyeing fabrics outdoors on the patio and garden area. My studio is on our peaceful and naturally beautiful property next to national parkland not far from Muir Woods and only 10 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge.

I genuinely enjoyed the experience of learning and dying my own scarf with Auli. She had a great balance of both knowledge and passion for the craft. It was a well-paced experienced, though I was so immersed that time went by fast for me. I ended up with a beautiful as well! I highly recommend this experience.

Everything was honestly so amazing and thought out. We went with a party of 5 for a bachelorette party and it was such a fun experience. It was very hands on and we all got to try different dyes and materials. We learned so much and Auli was truly such an amazing teacher. She was so helpful throughout and told us such great stories. We all had so much fun! Really really recommend going with a group of friends!

Great experience! Auli is a wealth of knowledge on dyeing and she made the process seamless. Not only did we go home with a beautiful souvenir but also an appreciation for unconventional materials for dyeing. Can't wait to try some at home!
