TOUR DESCRIPTION

After 50-minute drive from Barcelona we first visit the Benedictine Abbey, first built on the 11th century and home to Catalonia’s Patroness Saint, The Black Madonna, a strong symbol of spirituality and unity for the local people.

After, we hike up to the top, from where we enjoy the stunning views from the Natural Park of Montserrat and the rest of Catalonia from a bird´s eye view. Mediterranean Sea, main valley of the country and the Pyrenees further away, drawing the border with France.

During the hike we will walk on the same paths used by pilgrims hundreds of years ago, we will get inspired by Montserrat’s fascinating flora and fauna and we will experience unique ways where rocky pillars and ravines show us how inner mysterious water emerge from the hidden and undiscovered very center of the massif.

Back down in the Monastery area, we have some free time where you can browse amongst regional products in the local farmer’s market before we head back to Barcelona.

Where you'll be

We visit Montserrat’s Natural Park and its Abbey which is the heart of Catalan identity. Its combination of history, spirituality, nature and culture make Montserrat such a unique place to visit.

At the Abbey we see the Atrium, Basilica and Black Madonna. After, we hike through some of the most impressive viewpoints of the Natural Park. We enjoy breathtaking parts of this rock formation, while we share the legends hidden in the mountain.

David was our guide — and a rockstar, super fun and knowledgeable about the monastery, the trails, and the chapels throughout Montserrat. The hike is paved for most of the way and when not paved the path is still good. Not a super long hike but steep! However, definitely worth it for the view and the experience. We’re very glad we didn’t miss out on this hike and would absolutely suggest it to anyone I knew coming to Barcelona.

Our tour by Uni was the highlight of our trip to Barcelona. I had been to Montserrat before but this time I was traveling with my parents who are in their 80’s. I knew that the trip can potentially be quite strenuous physically, but wanted them to have the opportunity to see what I had seen. Montserrat is a magical place, with amazing views, an interesting history and of course, the black Madonna. In order to share it with my parents, I booked a private tour with Uni for just of the three of us. Uni picked us up exactly on time in a comfortable van and gave us a nice tour of the city. During the ride to Montserrat, he gave us an overview of the region and answered my father’s many questions about the rock formations. Because Uni arranged for us to arrive relatively early, we were able to see the Madonna without waiting in line, and then had a tour of the church before Sunday mass began. Had we come later in the day, we probably wouldn’t have been able to do either. Then, knowing that the walk to the top of the mountain have been impossible for my parents, Uni arranged for a discount on the funicular tickets and up we went. After Uni led us all on a comfortable walk on easy terrain with the opportunity to see some of the views I had enjoyed before, we sent my parents back by funicular. Uni then took me on a hike back down so that I could see a part of the mountain I wasn’t familiar with. Once we rejoined my parents, Uni allowed us time to shop at the farmer’s market and came and picked us up when we were ready to go. In other words, a perfect day where everyone got to do exactly what they wanted and still be together. Thank you Uni for being so flexible and easy to work with!

Danke David

This hike to Montserrat was quite memorable, even when the day started out with rain on our drive to the monastery and partially at the start of our hike. Frank, our tour guide for this trip was very informative, and although his English is not fluent, he was very informative throuhgout the hike. The hike varies in time, between 2-3 hours, depending on the pace of the group, and Frank did not rush us at all. The views of the surrounding area are unforgettable and the treats from the food stalls after the hike were delicious. The only thing we would have like at the end of the hike would be some time to freely explore the monastery on our own. Other than that, I believe this was the only guided hike in the area when we searched through AirBnB experience, but would still recommend it for those seeking a day-break adventure outside of Barcelona.
