What you'll do

Play some traditional Irish music for the first time in a unique and authentic setting!

*During Covid-19, masks must be worn (can be provided). Sanitizer, anti-bac wipes and soap are available.

When you arrive we'll chat a little about music to get the ball rolling. Absolutely no experience is required, however if you do have some musical experience of any kind we can try and relate this to the class. I'll tell you a little about the types of Irish tunes, where and how they are played, and then the activity will commence! We'll start with holding the instrument and then move on to learning your first tune.

Instruments taught are fiddle and tin whistle. This page is for fiddle classes. Instruments are provided! The instrument bank isn't the biggest in the world, so this determines class size.

Fiddle is suitable for 1 or 2 adults, or an adult and an older child, or 2 older children. Older children would need to be big enough to play an adult-sized fiddle. Solo experiences work for adults and children age 8 and up (with a parent present).

By the end of the class you will have all the skills needed to hold the instrument and play your first tune. You can record the tune and techniques as mementos of your visit
Other things to note
I teach by ear, so no experience of reading music is required. All that's needed is to believe in your ability to learn! If you do read music and

I have been playing traditional Irish music for the last 22 years, and listening to it since before I was born! In 2012 I was awarded a BA in Irish Music and Dance with First Class Honours from the University of Limerick. On graduating I followed the musical path to the cultural stronghold which is Co. Clare. Here, I love to teach music, play gigs and host sessions with good friends. I look forward to sharing music with you, whatever your experience, from my farmhouse kitchen.

Where you'll be

The class takes place in the kitchen of a traditional Irish farmhouse. It's the perfect place to play music. The house itself was built in the 1930's by a fiddle player called Tom Ward. With flagstone floors and high ceilings it is easy to imagine he had great acoustics in mind!

Great experience! Perfect for any level of player; Laura chose a song that my wife (who hadn't touched a violin in over 15 years) was able to learn and play back by ear. As I have played more recently, she also spent a bit of time with me giving me some tips on bowing and ornamentations. A great morning in County Clare.

Laura is a gifted fiddle player and a thoughtful instructor. She welcomed us with tea. I highly recommend this experience - whether you’re an absolute beginner or an experienced musician I guarantee you will learn something new. It is a quintessential Irish music experience.

What a lovely experience for my 8 year old daughter to have. She is a beginner at learning to play the violin so this was the perfect opportunity to experience a different style of music rather than just the classical style that she is being taught at home. She loved it! Thank you to Laura for taking the time to simplify the lesson for her. She and even myself, both learnt so much about the violin/fiddle. It is clear that Laura has a passion for this instrument which I hope my daughter will aspire to!

If you are debating this experience then we would say ‘ Do it!’ Laurie had never held a violin and I was intrigued to see if College days violin could be remembered. I hadn’t touched a violin for 45 years! We were both nervous..... Laura was magic. Patient and the piece she chose to teach us was both demanding and amazing! It was a real piece of music and we left her determined to get it together?!!! Maybe!? We didn’t in the hour but enough to be motivating. Enough to be looking on Trademe for a violin even! It was fun, no stress and Laura is an excellent, patient and flexible teacher. A fabulous experience that is so very Ireland!

Laura is an incredibly kind person and a talented fiddle player. I had a fantastic time learning a tune on the fiddle thanks to Laura’s great teaching. This was a great way to learn about the musical culture in the area and I am thankful to have had such a unique experience.

Laura was extremely friendly, accommodating, and experienced. She adjusted the music for our kids (who had some fiddle experience, which is not required) and gave them a lovely song to learn. We had a great time and would do it again when we are in the area!
