Hiking Remote Pyrenee Mountains to Secret Waterfall

Barcelona, Spain

Experience hosted by Jamie

What you'll do

You can take the express train from Barcelona Sants to Girona Train station which takes 38 mins or the regional train that takes 1 hr to Caldes de Malavella, from either Passeig de Gracia, El Clot-Arago. I will meet outside either station in van.

We'll hike in a area called Alta Garrotxa, which is most definitely my favourite mountain range, because of it’s remoteness and rugged landscape, where mountains peaks are blanketed with Forest. Covering an area of 32,865 hectares it has been declared an Area of Natural Interest, because how difficult it is to reach and it’s wealth of wildlife. The climate makes it perfect for hiking all year round, and although cold in the winter, it’s a great time to visit, where you’ll experience a dry climate, perfect for a days hiking.

The route starts next to the hostel in Sadernes and on the drive you’ll pass the medieval bridge of Valenti, crest beautifully over the gorge until you arrive in Sadernes, where we'll park and begin the hike.

We'll follow the Path of Valencians along the river where we'll pass turquoise pools and eventually the Waterfall of Sant Aniol d'Aguja. The waterfall is the highlight of the hike and it's incredible to jump in and cool off. .
Other things to note
The landscape in Alta Garroxta is spectacular with remote trails to completely immerse yourself in nature.
Perfect location to hike in summer and winter.

It was a very remote area in the nature with some stunning views, forests, waterfalls and transparent lakes where we swam and enjoyed a lot. Jamie also treated as with watermelon which was very refreshing. If you are looking for a truly memorable thing in Barcelona - this is it!

I was solo travelling through Spain and would recommend a trip with Jamie to anyone travelling to Barcelona. He is kind, thoughtful and responsive to your requests and specific needs. He shared unique stories about the region and you can tell he is passionate about nature. I had the unfortunate timing of travelling during the COVID19 outbreak. Jamie and I were in constant communication and he adjusted the trip to allow me to remain close to the city in case I needed to make any quick travel plans.

Surreal experience! You gotta go with Jamie- he's this great big guy with a company designed for - cityslickers, basically. He's good at navigating unpredictable situations and varied mostly technical Alta Garrotxa rugged/calcareous terrain just outside of the volcanic legacy region. Very grateful to him for creating such an incredible experience for us: finding vultures, secret waterfall for a dip, the world's largest natural border lines, and my inner gladiator in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains. Pyrenees how-to: We stopped for a cup of Earl grey out at "the bar" -just mingled with people, the spectacular peaks of the Pyrenees silhouetted by the breaking sunlight. Can't wait to see where he goes from here.

Jamie is a very friendly, helpful and professional guide, who can tell a lot about the best hikes around Barcelona. The route itself was amazing! The views changed a lot, from the forest, to the valleys and the top of the mountain, so it was interesting to hike and motivating to go to the top. Strongly recommend it!
