The Japanese traditional technique of repairing pottery called Kinstugi.

小諸市, Japan

Experience hosted by Midori

Warm and welcoming

What you'll do

You can experience the art of Kinstugi using Japanese lacquer.(For 2 hours)
We can't complete repairing the pottery in a one day lesson as the pieces need a few days to dry, so you will learn each process with different pottery. You unfortunately wont be able to bring the pottery home you will be working on during the lesson,
instead you can choose to bring home a piece of pottery which I have repaired.

In the workshop you will learn each process of Kinstugi including:
1.Fill a chipped portion of a piece of pottery with putty.
2.Sand down and smooth off a dried piece of pottery which was previously filled with putty.
3.Paint Japanese lacquer onto the pottery and coat with metal powder.
4.Fix some broken parts of a pottery piece using Japanese lacquer.
5.Choose a piece of pottery which I have repaired and take it home with you.

The art of Kinstugi as a Japanese traditional technique is widely appreciated now , not only in Japan but also increasingly popular in foreign countries.
I'd like to share some Japanese culture, Wabisabi and Mottainai spirit with you through Kinstugi.
Other things to note
I don't recommend this experience to children and people who have had an allergic reaction to lacquer in the past.

I'd like to provide my guests a unique experience of learning the traditional Japanese art of repairing pottery called Kinstugi.
I have reached 3 years as a host of my Airbnb guesthouse and I am now considered a superhost with many positive reviews from past guests.
Hosting guests for my Kinstugi lessons will be a new path for me using Airbnb.
I started working as a Kinstugi craft person about 6 years ago and began giving lessons on Kinstugi 4 years ago.
Usually I repair broken pottery which my customers bring to my shop.
I also teach some lessons of Kinstugi at other places 5 days a month in Gunma and Nagano prefecture.

Amazing! Mindori was amazing and we loved learning this beautiful art. We would recommend this to all of our friends. She took time to teach us her art and each step. Cute location and very hospitable.

This was a wonderful experience. We went through each step of the process and, in the end, got to pick a piece of repaired pottery to take home. The process is very meditative. Midori was a wonderful host. She was patient, kind, and thorough. Though she thinks her English is not great, I found her to be very fluent. If ever I find myself in the area again, I would even consider doing this a second time.

What a wonderful and unique experience! Midori was very patient and an excellent teacher. We learned so much from her about the history and contemporary practice of kintsugi. She also gave us some great insights into the local area. Highly recommend this experience!

Midori is extremely kind and very knowledgeable about Kintsugi. It was wonderful to have her share her art form with us and teach us something we knew nothing about but had briefly heard about it many years before. Her studio is extremely cozy and personalized beneath Asama, a beautiful volcano. She also has a wonderful cat named Pooh!

"金継ぎ"という他では経験できない体験に惹かれ、参加させていただきましたが、とても満足しました。みどりさんは、丁寧に工程を説明してくださり、2時間という限られた時間でしたが、余すことなく教えていただき、有り難かったです。禅のように集中し、落ち着いた時間で、旅のいい思い出となりました。猫ちゃんもとっても可愛かったです。ありがとうございました!
