We will also see the exhibition of the rebozo where you will learn about the dyeing, embroidery and weaving techniques used to make these pieces. Later in the beautiful cafeteria of the Franz Mayer museum cloister, while we talk, we will make a textile craft using the embroidery technique of your choice that you can take home.
It includes a note with a detailed explanation of the different stitches and their description.

I am Mexican and I studied Textile Design in the UIA, in the CdMx. For 7 years I worked in automotive textiles with the specialization in jacquard fabric. I grew up in a family where embroidery and weaving have been present. The textile wealth of our country has always attracted me and I have studied traditional techniques with artisans from Oaxaca, Chiapas, Hidalgo, Puebla, State of Mexico and in a self-taught way. In my constant investigation I realized how hard is to know about the process and the making of the mexican ethnic textiles, so I want to share this knnowledge and be abailable to every curious as me.

Maite is an excellent guide to learning about traditional embroidery and textile-making techniques in Mexico. During our visit to the museo de arte popular, we loved learning from Maite about the history of garment design and construction in different regions and communities across Mexico. My friend and I who met with Maite are artists and especially enjoyed the second half of the experience, which was to learn a traditional embroidery practice. I created an embroidered “Milagrito” inspired necklace, which was so special! I am inspired to teach an art workshop based on this activity when I return home to New York City!

Enjoyed seeing and learning about the different textiles at the Museo Arte Popular. Had a relaxing time in a beautiful courtyard learning and stitching with Maite. Very fun experience for me and my 12 year old daughter!

This was a really nice day! The museum tour was really nice. Maite has a deep knowledge of clothing and textiles throughout history. Stitching our projects was fun as well. Maite gave great instruction and everyone’s masks (how pragmatic of us) turned out really nice.
