What you'll do

Alpacas take to trekking quite easily. They walk in a line, one behind the other on a head collar and lead rope. Our guided treks start at the alpacas' barn and ascend into the forest. Each trek lasts about 1.5 hours. The walk itself is at a very leisurely pace, and is not at all strenuous.

When you arrive on site, the alpacas will be grazing, and we will call them in using their yellow food bucket! Simon and I will introduce you to the alpacas whist getting them ready with head collars and leads. We will have a brief health & safety chat, as well as give you some idea of what to expect and some pointers so you can interact with your alpaca. We will also introduce you to all of their individual quirks and personalities.

Alpacas are not able to carry packs or people, so they will accompany us as we walk the forest trail. We try not to let them stop to nibble grass for long periods. Half-way around the walk, we release the alpacas in an enclosed area, so we can feed them treats, and you can get very close and intimate with them. They will love you when we give you the apples to feed them. There will be plenty of photo opportunities throughout your visit.

Our spinning demonstration and luxury fibre display after the trek may not possible during Covid.

Simon and I adopted our first two Alpacas over ten years ago. It didn't take long to succumb to the addiction and our herd increased from two to four. Then to no one's surprise, four became six and so on until we reached 12. It is kind of like goldfish in a bowl, alpaca numbers grow to the size of the land you can have. You have to watch out though, before you know it you start looking for more land. We now have 17!

I am fortunate to have had an extensive background working with all kinds of fibre. I also teach spinning and knitting in our workshop at the farm. When we lived in England, we owned and operated a Mini Mill next to our knitting and knitwear shop called "The Naked Sheep".

This was an incredible and unique experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting Kerry. Mia and Simon were lovely hosts and our alpaca walk through the forest was so fun!

Wow...what else can I say?! Alpaca trekking through the woodlands with Simon and Mia was just fantastic! Both Mia and Simon were super friendly and took time to explain about the needs, likes, dislikes, behaviour, and personality of their alpacas. We were each matched with a different alpaca and were able to pet them as we walked. One of the highlights is "treat time" halfway through the trip where we fed tasty snacks to the alpacas. At the end of the trek, Mia walked us through the key steps of transforming the raw wool into super-soft products such as jumpers and hats. Overall, the experience was super enjoyable and truly unforgettable! I recommend that you try it if you are looking for something a bit different while staying in the gorgeous Kerry/Cork countryside.

This experience is really wholesome and worked as a perfect light outdoor activity to do on a day in the country. If you happen to be passing through the area, we would highly recommend. Mia and Simon make all their guests feel really welcomed and at home, and they give you very easy instructions on how to treat and handle the animals. We found ourselves very taken with the Alpaccas themselves; they’re incredibly sweet and gentle animals who are happily lead along on the hike. The hike itself is beautiful and not difficult. Mia even gave a really interesting demonstration of her wares in her spinning studio, and offered tea and biscuits and some really pleasant conversation after the tour was over. Highly recommended!

We spent a lovely morning with Mia, Simon and their wonderful alpacas. The alpacas are very well looked after and happily trekked into the beautiful forest with us - albeit with a few “snacks” along the way. Afterwards, Mia gave us a mini-demo on how the alpaca fleeces are turned into yarn and can be knitted into clothes and rugs. Beautiful weather, scenery, animals - and wonderful hosts - I’d recommend this excursion to anyone holidaying in the area.

Second year doing this wonderful experience and it was just as much of a pleasure. If you’re in the area this is a fantastic 2 hours out to enjoy a healthy walk in a magical location. Alpacas are gentle creatures and somehow add to the calm mindfulness. Mia and Simon are great hosts. They know each animal and care for them so well. Little slice of heaven.
