What you'll do

We'll start our experience at one of Soweto's original pubs and currently the trendiest hang out spot for locals. we will then get on our bikes and explore the rich history of Soweto.

Starting in Vilakazi street, home to 2 Nobel Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. We will then cycling to the Hector Pietersen Museum to learn more about the role the youth of 1976 played during apartheid in South Africa.

We will make a stop at a local Café, before cycling the vibrant streets of Soweto again making our way to other sites such as the Orlando Stadium in Orlando East. Here, we will get to understand how Soweto came to be, and what important events took place. We will also see where Nelson Mandela used to train boxing.

We will then cycle to a local brewing company for a refreshing beer tasting and history of the brewery, before making our way back to where we started for lunch which is a Kota (township burger ).

We will teach the local lingo cause everywhere we go, locals will want to have a little interaction with you.
Other things to note
I do not cover entrance fee to Nelson Mandela house & Hector Pietersen, however, we do visit both venues. Looking forward to hosting you

I am a Soweto born entrepreneur, a cyclist and I am the founder of BOOK IBHONI. The word "IBHONI" is Soweto slang for saying "a bicycle" ..see? you have learned something new already. I love telling Soweto stories and sharing the rich heritage we have in Soweto with visitors.

I having been hosting visitors in Soweto for the past 4 years, have won awards locally from LeadSA and Dept. of Agriculture and rural development, I am a brand ambassador for Brand South Africa & I am a qualified South African Specialist by South African tourism, recently I was named in the 200 Young South Africans by Mail & Guardian.

Where you'll be

We will be in the heart of Soweto. Vilakazi Street, the most popular street in Soweto & Johannesburg. The atmosphere is vibrant , the people are welcoming and always ready to assist with anything. We will start our experience at my favorite hang out spot, The Shack. Great venue, best of local music and all round fantastic vibe.

We had an amazing time on this tour. It was very educational, stopping at some important landmarks. Mpumelelo and his colleagues were very professional, friendly, genuine and down to earth. We stopped at some local shops during the tour to buy crafts, beer and food - helping the local community. We weren't sure what to expect on our way to the tour, especially with the negative things people say about Soweto, however, all those myths were dispelled once we met with Mpumelelo and started the tour. Soweto is full of energy, vibes and people who all have the same aspirations as the rest of us. I will definitely book another tour and encourage anyone visting Joburg to

We had an amazing time biking and touring Soweto with Mpumelo! He was very relaxed & personable. The bike route was not too challenging and both historic and scenic, would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in checking out Soweto and getting a bit of a workout!

We had a great time. Riding around and across Soweto was not only nostalgic, even though I had never been before, but very informative and felt really wholesome. We got good exercise, history lessons, laughs, hiking, beer tasting, and an authentically African experience that really can't be replicated by anyone who isn't from the space. It was a special time. PS: If you're going to ride the bikes, wear sneakers - no flip flops here.
