What you'll do

Indian food is known for its amazing regional variety and use of different spices. We're 2 home chefs bringing you some of our favorites from around the country. You will be able to easily recreate these dishes at home in your own kitchen.

Our classes are highly interactive - we cook along with you, guide you at every stage, and share tips and tricks that recipes never mention. We’ll also tell you the history or tradition behind the dishes you will make, and give you suggestions on how to adapt with ingredients easily available to you.

We have 4 menu options from different regions.

-Calcutta Kathi Roll & Masala Chai (Bengal) - Egg wrap with choice of vegetable or meat filling with a flavorful cup of tea (THURSDAY)

-Goan Vindalho and Raita (Anglo Indian/Goan) - Pork curry and yogurt side dish (FRIDAY)

-Keema Matar and Cachumber (North India) - Ground meat with peas and a zesty salad (SUNDAY)

-Coconut Rice & Vegetable Kurma (South India) - Rice cooked in coconut milk with a typical south Indian flavored vegetable curry (SUNDAY)

We’ll adjust the heat level from spices to your liking. And if you have food allergies or diet restrictions, please inform us when you book. We can easily adapt our recipes!

Prices are per person.

Contact us for private groups (up to 10 people)- girls/guys night, mum/dad groups, birthdays, mother’s/father’s day, team-building events.

I have been cooking Indian food since the age of 8 and learned to cook from my grandmother, aunt and other family members. Having been a working mother, I cooked using shortcuts that didn’t compromise the authenticity of the dish. I have taught numerous cooking classes in India, Germany and the US. My expertise is putting a quick tasty authentic meal on the table within 30-45 minutes.

I have teamed up with my high school friend Yuti, who is based in Mumbai India to offer these online cooking experiences. Her forte lies in coastal and south Indian cuisine, specifically the cuisines of small communities whose food is rarely found in restaurants.

I live in Palo Alto and actively supports my local community.

My 14 year old grandson has been visiting- and we wanted to take a lesson on making Indian food. We saw that Janaki was offering zoom classes through Airbnb- so we signed up. I had never made Indian food before. We were sent the list of ingredients several days before our meeting. Some of the spices I didn’t have, but there’s a nearby Indian market that sold the many spices we needed. The communication between Jonake, Yuriar and myself was great- they answered every question I had prior to the lesson. We prepared as much as we could the night before, so as not to disrupt the lesson. I found out that Jonake was doing the demonstration from her home in Palo Alto, while her assistant, Yuti, was coming in from Mumbai, India! The zoom meeting 90% of the time, came in clear and understandable. Jonake explained and demonstrated the proper methods of the Indian cooking techniques; such as frying your spices first- then grinding them up- then add a chopped red onion, then adding other ingredients. There was quite a lot of spice, garlic, and hot peppers in the food- I was thinking this was going to be incredibly spicy- but Jonake showed how a mixture of yogurt with a few spices, could tone the food down. She also gave a tip if you’re eating very spicy food- to drink some milk along with it! She and Yuti made sure we we able to follow the directions- and Jonake continually had her cooking demonstration in full view to follow along, making it very easy to cook what we had never attempted before! The result was a spicy chicken dish, with a spicy cauliflower dish, with the plain yogurt on the side. The flavors were amazing! By the time the lesson was over, it seemed as if we had made two new friends! After the three of us ate, I gave some of the cauliflower dish to my elderly Indian neighbor man- he was impressed and was excited to try it! I HIGHLY recommend Jonake and Yuti’s Indian cooking classes- God bless them!
