What you'll do

Join naturalist, Molly Bones, and her two donkey buddies, Fish and Sully, for an afternoon stroll along the beautiful Presumpscot River!
We will start your adventure by getting to know these two adorable characters who will immediately lower your blood pressure just by being in their presence. These guys are chill.
Bones will then fill you in on some donkey facts, behaviors, why these ‘mini’ donks are so small, what they love and how to best care for them. After making sure everyone is comfortable and ready for an adventure, we will then grab our day packs with the delicious picnics we have packed ourselves ( hopefully including Fish and Sullies favorites such as fig newtons, tortilla chips or carrots ) and head off towards the river. Nature lovers may want to bring a pair of binoculars and adventurous types might throw in a bathing suit and towel.
Our Donkey Walks are more of a leisurely stroll than a hike. A mosey really. Lots of time to share stories, identify mushrooms and animal tracks, jump in the river, lay in the sun while learning to defend your lunch from the donkeys and just enjoy the forest and river. Usually we make it as far as the falls by a lake before turning around after the picnic for a total walking distance of around 1.3 miles.
Our Donkeys absolutely love walking with new friends and we can almost guarantee you will experience similar ecstasy!

Where you'll be

We will meet at the home of my godson and his family where our “communal” donkey friends currently reside. Caro and Si’s Farm is a gorgeous oasis less than 1/2 hour from Portland Maine. Their 30+ acres includes rolling fields, protected forest, a long stretch of river frontage, and of course, the donkey pasture....more like a donkey spa really, complete with mural and The Donkey Cafe. (There is also a rope tow up Donkey Bluff for winter sports!)

This is an absolutely incredible experience. Bones brings the landscape to life as she tells stories about the area, her past, and the animals and plants in the forest all around us. She and her donkeys Sully and Fish are such vibrant and individual characters that you lose all track of time while wandering at a leisurely pace through the trails and across wooded streams.

What a wonderful experience!! Sully and Fish are just the cutest donkeys around and Molly is a fantastic host. The walk has some gorgeous views and truly magical spots varying from woods to water to open fields. An easy walk for all ages, too :) So happy we got to spend some time with Molly and the boys!

This was great! I booked for a group of friends and I, and we all really enjoyed it. It was better than I had expected. The donkeys were adorable, friendly and very entertaining! The scenery was awesome with all of the fall colors and the river. Bones was a great host who really enjoys giving the tours and getting to know everyone on the tour. I would highly recommend as a fun, relaxing thing to do!

I booked this tour on a whim because it looked quirky and fun, but it became one of the favorite activities on our entire 8 night trip through Maine. We booked a private tour with Molly Bones and her Donkeys for our family of 5 (3 kids ages 12,11,8). Molly is an amazing storyteller and taught us so much about the natural history of the area and about miniature Donkeys. Our kids loved interacting with the Donkeys and the hike was beautiful and magical. If you are considering this tour, definitely book- it will be one of the highlights of your trip!
