What you'll do

Morning tour only:
Meet on the cafe level of the City Lodge Hotel in Jozi's arty Newtown district. We start the morning with an interesting talk on the history of the area we are about to visit. A walk takes in the sights, architecture and street art of the area. Our first stop is at South Africa's famous and historic Oriental Plaza, tasting samoosas (only snack for your own account. About R15 pp) unique to this place that Nelson Mandela once visited.
Morning and night tour:
We pop in at a sweetmeat shop to taste this rich and very sweet Indian delicacy, sit down for a South Indian treat, then freshening up for a street drink from Mozambique. We sample more hidden Indian delicacies, hand made on the street washed down with the local lassi or juice drinks. Dessert are treats from Jordan and Syria, the last one usually the highlight of the tour. I'll tell you interesting snippets about the area as we walk, and you get to meet my local friends, and chat to them yourselves about their delightful offerings! Also a photographer's dream, and a very safe experience.

Meet one of South Africa's top travel bloggers, ex-restaurateur, tour operator and Jozi foodie. Many people in this vibrant city share my passion for it's people and food culture. Unfortunately, due to the city's size and reputation, guests are often intimidated to find the secret spots. I am curious, love trying new things, am fascinated by different cultures and people, and especially love food! Born in Jozi, I have lived here for the past 18 years, today I am well known for my passion for this vibrant, friendly, cosmopolitan place. Hope to share it with you soon! I also do tours of Soweto, the Cradle of Humankind and other nature tours under Eenblond TOURS.

We will be in the Muslim neighbourhood of Fordsburg. Fordsburg is community orientated and largely very safe. The relationship between Muslims in South Africa and the rest of the country is a very peaceful one - please dress appropriately.

Highly recommended. Went with a group of other locals and we were all impressed with the tour and it opened up a new avenue of Joburg life for some of us. Really recommend for South Africans and tourists alike. Great insight into a historical and complex community. Even better food! For those wondering overseas: SA is open!

Gilda was a wonderful and charismatic tour guide who really loves her city of Joburg. She provided a great history of the city prior to venturing out and then once going she relayed information about all we saw and tasted. Her food sampling choices were well thought out and we left with full bellies and hearts for the people and place!

Gilda was such a nice guide, really friendly and knew a lot about the area (she seems to know everyone). I had lot of fun on her tour which shows the hidden places in the borough! I absolutely loved it

I had a great time exploring street food with Glida! She has built strong relationships with local people. So I didn’t feel any risks even though the tour was held in Johannesburg at night.

Fabulous tour. Gave me a real insight into the cultural mix within Johannesburg, and the food was all completely delicious. Gilda is a great guide, knows her stuff and is known by everyone. I would happily do this tour all over again tomorrow.
