What you'll do

This experience, for those 12 years old and up, includes learning all about alpacas as well as a trek around the farm while leading your own alpaca "buddy"! We begin in the Tuscan inspired barn, housing our horses and friendly donkey, "Jack". Starting with "Alpacas 101"-a 45 minute interactive talk regarding: origin, use, fleece, biology, breeding & behavior, you will become "Alpaca Experts"! Next we assign each person an alpaca and begin our trek. The trail starts across a bridge, up a wooded ravine and then along a fence adjacent to a 2,000 acre ranch where you will see beautiful vistas of the surrounding hills and mountains of Carmel Valley. We stop under a large oak trea for refreshments and interact with the alpacas. Continuing on the trail we go back to the pastures, passing horses, alpacas, goats and more stunning views of the Valley. There will be ample opportunities to engage with your furry friends and take photos of the landscape as well as the alpacas.
Other things to note: the Alpaca Trek is not suitable for children under 12.
Must be able to physically walk/hike up a moderately sloped trail while leading 150+ pound alpaca. Wear proper shoes for hiking. Running shoes/sneakers are ok. We will still go on the trek if there is light rain-so if this is the forecast bring rain hats/ponchos. Be sure to bring your camera or smartphone to take lots of photos!

Bonnie and Michael, both veterinarians, moved to L. A. in 1991. After a trip along scenic CA HWY 1, a fantasy to retire to a farm on the beautiful central coast transpired. We sold our veterinary practices in L.A. and in 2015 we moved to D'Jango Hill Farm, named after our rescue dog. The farm is home to a menagerie of animals, many of them rescues: a herd of alpacas, several horses, a mammoth donkey, giant tortoises, chickens, goats, pigs and a handsome ram rescued as a baby from a livestock auction, as well as a few dogs and cats! Bonnie is eager to share her hobby and passion for these adorable, quirky camelids. From yearly shearing, toenail trims, breeding and raising "crias" (baby alpacas), she has come to cherish her time with these incredible animals. We are eager to share our experience so you too can fall in love with alpacas!

Where you'll be

D'Jango Hill Farm is a unique combination of rescued animals (pigs, tortoises, dogs, cats, sheep, goats) as well as horses, chickens and a donkey nestled in the surrounding hills, mountains and valley. The barn where we meet the alpacas is a beautiful Tuscan inspired building (frequently mistaken for a house!). As you lead your furry alpaca friends on our farm trail, you will pass through a wooded ravine and emerge to stunning vistas.

I’ve been around llamas before and didn’t know how different they are from alpacas. I loved learning about the alpacas, getting to know their personalities, and seeing how much Bonnie loves them.

We had a wonderful experience and learning a lot about Alpaca's. Bonnie was an amazing host and really took time to teach us about Alpaca's and how to be around them. Her Alpaca's are beautiful and well cared for. I would love to return in the future.

dr bonnie is a wonderful host and if you dont already love and admire alpacas before this experience you certainly will after a couple hours with these creatures. being a veterinarian bonnie has deep knowledge and insight to the animals and has created a thoughtful, educational, and at times humorous, adventure with these camelids. i loved walking mariposa the alpaca who was a great sidekick. i only wished we could have said hi to the horses and goats in the barn and spent more time with django the dog, but definitely 5 stars and thank you bonnie for sharing these lovable alpacas!
