What you'll do

Every parrot has a story. You’ll learn all about our rainbow-colored rescues in Kona’s only parrot sanctuary.

We’ll start with our mission: to give every displaced parrot a nutritious diet, large space to fly, and a safe place to interact with other parrots (and people).

Next, we'll take a walk around the sanctuary, where you can get to know the range of personalities of cockatoos, lovebirds, macaws, and more species.

Throughout the tour, you will have many photo opportunities, especially with our well-trained parrots.
Other things to note:
Wear casual clothes, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and bring a camera. Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary is also home to two rescue dogs, two Holstein cows and two sulcata tortoise.

While we like to keep our group sizes small to enhance a personal experience, we are open to hosting larger family/friend groups with more than six individuals.

I grew up on the Big Island and have always been surrounded by lush trees, the captivating ocean, and tropical animals that give Hawaii an energy that can’t be replaced.

Our family started noticing a large amount of parrots who outlived their owners (parrots can live up to 100 years)! There was no place for them to call home, so we decided to build one.

Since then, my family has rescued parrots globally for the last 18 years.

If you are wondering whether or not to do this, do it! Don’t let the country drive up to their property scare you either (it’s a twisty, narrow back road and you’ll wonder if you’re in the right place!) Parrots in Paradise was one of the highlights of our holiday in Hawaii! Gerry and his family are truly wonderful people who take excellent care of these parrots (and a few other rescue animals). Gerry gave our tour and you can tell he is very passionate about the birds and educating everyone. We spent almost 2.5 hours walking and observing each bird, with him giving information on each bird. We also got to hold/pet/snuggle with a few of the parrots too. Please consider going on this experience and supporting this wonderful rescue, you won’t regret it!

Great way to spend a couple hours away from the ocean and crowds of Kona. This sanctuary is amazing for all the rescue and re-homing efforts they do for parrots. Highly recommended.

Wonderful place to learn more about parrots and how to care for them. Check out this place to learn more about how challenging it can be own a parrot before you buy a young one. Rescue is best. These guys do a terrific job of caring for the many souls in their care! Such a nice family and great birds

This was our second time here. It was my son’s 8th birthday and this was what he chose to do for the day. It’s a beautiful setting and it’s neat to learn about the stories of the birds and what brought them to the sanctuary. Gerry is so nice and patient and you can tell that they are very passionate about the sanctuary and educating others about the birds and their care. The kids have a special connection with one bird especially and that’s always a highlight of our Big Island visit. Thanks again and we will be back again!

It was such a cool experience to learn about these birds and what makes each of them unique. Their personalities are so distinct and if you go I am sure at least one will make an impression on you - they did for us! This is definitely something we want to do again next time we visit Kona!
